I don’t know about you but there is no shortage of shoes at my house right now. We’ve traded one pair of sandals for running shoes, indoor shoes, rain boots, cleats and soon enough the skates will be back too.
And somehow, they all need a place to live.
Back-to-school has a funny way of showing you how well your house is actually working for your family.
Maybe you didn’t notice it as much this summer. You were at the cottage, visiting family or running from one daycamp to the next. It was easy to make things work.
But now you’re back to a routine, and you’re thinking:
We really need more space.
We need another bathroom.
Where are we supposed to put all this stuff?
Or maybe you knew this last spring and decided to make it work for another year.
This is one of the reasons I think of September as the second spring market. Buyers are back into their routines, families are thinking about the year ahead, and people who put their real estate plans on hold over the summer start paying attention again.
If you’re realizing your house has stopped working for your family, that doesn’t mean you need to put it on the market tomorrow. It might just be time to start preparing.
Figure out what your home could realistically sell for. Make a plan for the repairs or updates you’ve been putting off. Start thinking about what you’d need in your next home.
Because selling doesn’t have to start with “Let’s list.” Sometimes it starts with: “Okay. This house isn’t working for us anymore. What would it take to change that?”
Stick around this month because we’re going back to the basics of getting ready to move, whether that move is happening soon or is still somewhere down the road.
Either way, I’ll be ready when you are.
